Exclamation Point

Use exclamation points sparingly. They can make writing seem both juvenile and falsely enthusiastic.

In sentences, place exclamation points inside quotation marks or parentheses only if they are part of what proceeds them.

• He asked, “Please read Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
• She kept the toddler from touching the stove by shouting “don’t”!
