Our creative staff provides high visibility, high impact communications related to the top strategic goals of the university through communication planning, project management, resource allocation, and the creative production and use of photography and video; storytelling, content strategy, and editorial services; web design; and print collateral.

David Holston


Associate Vice President, Creative and Shared Services

Dave Holston leads Emory’s 25-plus person in-house creative agency. Prior to Emory, Holston was the senior director of creative strategy and brand management at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he led 30+ creative professionals responsible for brand development, creative, marketing, and digital strategy.

For more than a decade, Holston was director of design management at the University of Texas at Austin, where he built the university’s first Office of Public Affairs creative department, updated UT Austin’s digital presence, and created the university’s first comprehensive brand strategy. He served as creative director for European game developer Blue Byte Software, was senior art director at the Philadelphia advertising firm Signature Communications, and a graphic designer for General Electric, Martin Marietta, and Lockheed Martin.

Holston has been a consultant to higher education institutions across the country. He is the author of three books on communication strategy: The Strategic Designer; Show Me, Don't Tell Me: Visualizing Communication Strategy; and Design for Online Engagement, published through Simon & Schuster. Holston studied design at the University of the Arts.
